टाइपिंग को ही हिंदी में टंकण कहते हैं। आधुनिक युग में टंकण का विशेष महत्व है। आधुनिक युग के अधिकतर उपकरणों पर कुछ कीज़ लगी होती हैं। जिनके द्वारा हमें इन मशीनी उपकरणों (आधुनिक युग की मशीनो) को आॅपरेट करना होता है। यानि चलाना होता है। जैसे- मोबाईल फोन, कैलकुलेटर, फोटो काॅपीयर आदि।
टाइपिंग एक वह तथ्य है जिसके बिना आज के युग में कम्प्यूटरों पर काम करने में दिक्कत महसूस की जाती है, अथवा कह सकते हैं कि इसके अभाव में कम्प्यूटरों पर काम करने की कल्पना नहीं कर सकते। कम्प्यूटरों पर काम करने के लिए उसके की-बोर्ड से परिचित होना अति आवश्यक है। अपने डाॅक्यूमेंटस(दस्तावेज) तैयार करने (बनाने) के लिए टाइपिंग की आवश्यकता पड़ती ही है। कुछ जरूरी काम तो हमें स्वयं ही करने होते हैं अर्थात टाइपिंग एक अति आवश्यक टूल (यंत्र) बन गया है। इसका सीखना इतना दुश्कर (कठिन) भी नहीं है जितना लगता है। की-बोर्ड परिचय के उपरान्त यह सिर्फ अभ्यास आधारित है। जितना अभ्यास किया जाता है उतनी ही इसमें महारत आती जाती है। सब कर सकते है, बस प्रयत्न की आवश्यकता है। अर्थात् मन बनाइये और जुट जाइए इस प्रयास में महारत न सही। इसका पर्याप्त ज्ञान ही आपके कार्यों को संपादित करने में चार चांँद लगा देगा। और आप बड़े ही सुकून के साथ अपने कार्य स्वयं कर सकते है।
